How to Transition from a Family Home to Supported Independent Living (SIL)

Moving from the family home into Supported Independent Living is a big step. Here's a simple, practical guide to planning it well, and how MG Healthcare Living can support you along the way.

How to Transition from a Family Home to Supported Independent Living (SIL)

Moving out of the family home is a major milestone. For someone living with disability, and for the family who loves them, it can bring excitement, hope and plenty of questions all at once. While the transition can feel overwhelming at first, the right support and planning can make the process smoother, more comfortable and empowering for everyone.
The Benefits of Supported Independent Living
Supported Independent Living (SIL) helps people live more independently while still getting the support they need for everyday tasks and routines. Many people find that SIL helps them:
  • Build confidence in everyday life
  • Develop greater independence
  • Learn valuable life skills
  • Create meaningful social connections
  • Improve overall wellbeing and quality of life
The goal isn’t simply to provide support. It’s to help people live the life they choose, with greater freedom and confidence.

Six Steps to a Smoother Transition

  1. Start with goals, not logistics. Talk openly about what a good life looks like: who they’d like to live with, what they want to learn and what matters most day to day.
  2. Check your NDIS plan. SIL funding needs to be part of a participant’s plan. Speak with your support coordinator or planner early, so you know where you stand before making any decisions.
  3. Explore your options. Look at different homes, locations and housemate arrangements. Ask providers how they match people, and what a typical week looks like.
  4. Visit and get to know the home. Where possible, spend time in the home and meet the support team and future housemates before moving in. Familiar faces make a big difference.
  5. Build skills gradually. Practise routines such as cooking, budgeting and getting around the community while still at home, so the move feels like a natural next step.
  6. Plan the move together. Agree on a moving date, pack familiar belongings and set up regular check-ins with family. Settling in takes time, and that’s completely okay.
